    Long Heel for straight lines.

I am very new to engraving. I found this morning that making a very long heel (0.015-0.020") is helping me to make the depth of cut more consistent. Not good for curves but seems to work well for straight lines. I'm using Steve's universal 116 degree template.

Is this a bad practice to start? Why?
