slowly but surely I'll get there.....
Well,
I am slowly starting to get my engraving spot set up in the house. If I was to put it in the shop then I would never go home. I've been dying to get a bench in the house set up. Here are some pics of the progress. Soon I should have all the goodies to get started! :whoo: Before After |

Looking good!
Mine is in the corner of the garage. Built my own bench but I'm pretty sure we have the same light hanging over it. I see much happiness in your future. |

Re: slowly but surely I'll get there.....
There are many good reasons for putting your engraving in the house. I had mine in the shop for a while but it took too long to heat up the ball here in Montana in the winter as I heat with wood. So the ball would get cold at nite and then I had to put a glove on to turn the ball. Now that it is in the house it not only stays warm but I spend more time in the house with the wife and rather than watch tv after dinner I can go engrave and not leave the wife alone while I am in shop. Works well for me.

Re: slowly but surely I'll get there.....
Yeah - minor problems in my case. It gets cool in the garage in the Winter and a bit warm in the Summer but it's ok.
But it is the most isolated spot in the house so the ever-indulgent wife and the cats tend not to come join me. |

Re: slowly but surely I'll get there.....
Yeah I thought about the coldness in the basement this winter and what effect it will have on me. What you don't see in the pic is a small wood stove on the left of the bench. I was thinking about replacing it with some sort of pellet stove or something more efficient. It's not something that needs to be run everyday, but just when I am down there. Any suggestions?

Re: slowly but surely I'll get there.....
I've just got a little space heater / fan under my feet and a light soft jacket for the Winter.
For the Summer I've got a fan and, as needed, a sweatband (I lived in the desert for 13 years and learned how to sweat professionally). |

I don't think you will have as much of a problem since you are in the basement. My shop is separate from the house and gets real cold over nite at 20 to 20 below

Re: slowly but surely I'll get there.....
Neil's got a point - most of my temperature control in the garage is because it's the garage. Opening the garage door lets out just a bit of the warmth in the Winter and boy does a car engine dump a lot of heat into the space after you park in the Summer!

Oh the trials and tribulations of the aspiring engraver, what we must endure to try and find that little spot of fame, I only have fame in my neighborhood cause they don't know a thing about engraving. They never met a real engraver.

Re: slowly but surely I'll get there.....
Jay, that is way more room then what I have to work in. If you take the before pic and put a vise on either side and then double the stuff around it. You have my size of space I am working in. I do have a window unit air conditioner but no heat source yet. If the temps get below a certain degree it doesn't take long not to want to do any work. You don't get much work done when the piggies are freezing and cold.

Re: slowly but surely I'll get there.....
Tony, I agree, I can suffer the cold to do alot of things but when it comes to engraving I want to be as comfortable as possible. No distractions that way.
