Acanthus gorget necklace
Hi all,
I few weeks ago I believe Chris had made a comment about the acanthus form as an engraving. I'd also been interested in the form for years and this is an attempt to refine my previous engravings. So here is a sterling silver gorget handwrought from sheet with a hammer turned edge approximately 3 1/4" wide. Your comments and critiques are welcomed. Mark www.MarkThomas-graver.com |

Re: Acanthus gorget necklace
Hi Mark. Acanthus is timeless and has been used for ornament as far back as ancient Greece. It sorta burned itself out in the Victorian period and was sadly replaced with Art Nouveau and the modernist art period somewhere in the late 1800s.
I enjoy seeing ornamental work that has a healthy dose of acanthus influence. Your work is wonderful. Chris |

Re: Acanthus gorget necklace
Hi all, Thanks for the kind words and support.
Dave, the acanthus is a floral form used in art forms it seem forever. I feel is a basis for understanding the flow and form of floral influenced art forms. You will learn more and what it is very soon if not already. Chris, thanks, yeah the acanthus has so many unlimited forms. I enjoy seeing the diversity in what projects you will work on. Keep us posted and grinning with your eloquence. Mark www.MarkThomas-graver.com |

Re: Acanthus gorget necklace
Thanks Steve and Mark. Everyone here is so helpful. I can understand the importance of the flow in art especially in floral pattern. I use florals mostly in tattoo work but can see how nice they look in metal as well. Has anyone ever used floral patterns, lets say, instead of scroll work on something. In tattoo we use floral and vine work alot. Just wondering.
