Bulino practice plate
I'm recently practicing "bulino" engraving and this is one of my first attempts... not a disaster I think, at least you can notice that is a duck jajaja.
Maybe my lines are still too big (the duck is about 3 x 2.5cm) and I feel in some moments the need of a microscope... Do you always use microscope when you do bulino engraving?

Re: Bulino practice plate
Bruno, in answer to your question, few if any Italian engravers use a scope for bulino work. They use a 10X loupe held in the off hand. On the other hand, most Americans use the scope.

Re: Bulino practice plate
Thank you Roger and Daniel, I really appreciate your coments!
I'm trying now to use the 10X loupe, but is a bit uncomfortable for me.

Re: Bulino practice plate
I dont use any magnification when doing bulino work. It is meant to be viewed with the naked eye so I think it should be engraved that way. I found that with magnification you tend to want to put in too many dots and lines that viewed with the naked eye dont make all that much difference.

Re: Bulino practice plate
Thank you Herman for your advice, I'll try to engrave bulino with naked eye and see if is too much effort for the eye or not.
P.S. I really like your knives.

Re: Bulino practice plate
Bruno, that looks great for a first attempt! On that back wing try to get it a lot darker to show it's behind the front wing and this will add tho the perspective and contrast. Keep at it!
I tried a 10x loupe and I cant use them either as I steady my left hand with my right hand. I am left handed. I do have a pair of Zeiss 4.5x surgical loupes I use occasionally on tiny parts like eyes to leave a nice white highlight. Your big cat looks much better! You look like a natural for bulino work, keep it up! |
