Practice Knife
Hi all,
Here is another of my practice knives. My worst nightmare is the background removal. I have drag problems when removing the background with a flat graver in the inside of the tight curves of the backbones and leaves. Can someone help me with an advice?. I tried to sharpen a flat graver with a 25º heel for increase the elevation angle, but I don’t know if the flat gravers are the best geometry for background removal. Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you mates, Carlos |

Re: Practice Knife
Hi Carlos,
Very nice work on the knife. If you cross hatch and then remove the back ground with a small flat ,I believe as mrthe does, and I do too, this way there's no drag marks. You can also put a radius on the flat graver.Your heel seems okay. Useful link; http://www.airgraver.com/engraving_graver.htm SE

Re: Practice Knife
That looks great!
For clearing the background make a very small flat and come straight at the curve so the straight edge of the flat is going into (rather than along) the curve. Here's a crude sketch with the curve ( and the graver pointed into it. (<- |

Re: Practice Knife
Cross hatch to leave small pyramids then use flat from lots of directions so you come straight at the opposite "wall" of the design or border. This is where you take advantage of the rotation of the engravers block. Some times it is necessary to remove the belly of the flat just behind the cutting edge to get clearance.- Fred
