Re: More Scroll
When I just saw that I used several words my kids shouldn't hear I sure would like to see someone draw that from the start. It just boggles my mind how someone can see that far ahead or see that on the plate in their mind and just draw it.
There is so much there I wouldn't know where to start.

Re: More Scroll
Some engravings look incredibly complicated, but if you break it down to sections it is then more understandable.
Start with an area, draw your basic scrolls, add some more, intertwine them, use your imagination, move to the next area, do the same, go back and incorporate the first with this. Before you know it the design will expand and come together. Phil |

Re: More Scroll
Phil,
I want to thank you for posting your work. It's been very helpful. I'll read an old post of yours and beat feet to the shop for a hour or two of intense carving. I have a lot of learning but in way that's the fun part. Looking at some of your deep relief carving examples in a old post made me realize I was very much on the right track. I just need to keep working at it as I was only 1/3 of the way done. Well, that and another year or three of practice and more gravers. I don't have any rotary tools. Are they really needed? I prefer carving.

Re: More Scroll
I don't use rotary tools......except to cut the grass you're better of with flat chisels.

Re: More Scroll
That's what I thought and it makes me very happy. I hate the fine grit and dust from rotary tools.
We don't have grass. Plenty of gumbo, rock and gravel. Living in what's basically a northern desert we save the well water for watering horses and the time saved for more rewarding work. If you've ever seen a Charles M. Russell painting you know what it looks like in this part of Montana. I consider CMRussell a great landscape painter that felt he needed something in the foreground to complete the painting. He had a great eye for the Big Sky landscape. Only thing missing is the wind.
