Close-up knife engravings
These are scanned in from older 35mm slides. You may need to scroll
right and left to view them since they might not fit on the screen. Sorry the images/scans aren't very clear. The first one is raised gold and flat on top... The 2nd one has no gold The 3rd one is a stainless knife with the same raised flat gold as the first and covered it all. The edges have twisted wire inlayed around it. The last one was an earlier protype folders I had made. I don't remember what I didn't like about it but there was something and that is why I didn't do very much engraving on it. The gold in it is rose gold.

Re: Close-up knife engravings
One rarely sees scanned 35mm slides come out that good! To get that kind of quality one usually has to have prints made then scan the prints or have it done professionally.

Re: Close-up knife engravings
Totally agree with Ron, you have definitely set the "Gold Standard" for the rest of us! Absolutely beautiful! Thank you for sharing these.
I'm fascinated to know how you inlay twisted gold wire without crushing it totally out of shape? It must be particularly difficult around the edges!

Re: Close-up knife engravings
Thanks everyone for the good comments.
Use scotch tape to temporarily hold the wire in place while using a nylon punch to hammer on top of the tape and inlay the twisted wire. It will still deform/squish the wire somewhat but not a lot.

Re: Close-up knife engravings
Excellent work Steve, I see that all utilizais 24K gold inlay, one could try brass wire, to get good technique and not spoil gold.
Trabajo inmejorable Steve, veo que todos utilizáis incrustaciones de oro de 24K, se podría probar con alambre de latón, hasta coger buena técnica y no estropear oro |

Excuse me for stepping in here but I think brass would be too hard for you to learn the technique of inlay. You could try annealed copper but that might still not be as maleable as fine gold. Roger |

Re: Close-up knife engravings
I have been inlaying brass (and aluminum) wire for practice for a while. It works great! I figure, if I ever get around to doing 24k gold, it will be even easier.

Re: Close-up knife engravings
Thanks again. Gert, I plan to one day get back to engraving more again.
There is a knife in the safe that has been there quite a while that is half finished. This is a picture of the first knife I fully made and engraved. Before that time I was only engraving other makers knives. It was done in 1986. I only had a bench drill press, jewelers saw, files and sand paper that were used to make it. I converted the top of the drill press to a disc sander that I did the blade on. A good customer, Dr. Suzuki from Japan had it in his knife collection.

That means we were 12 years old when we were married. Here are shots of the bottom and top of the knife.

Re: Close-up knife engravings
Awesome work Steve, I think of extreme hardship, must have saved many hours to reach this result.
Greetings Impresionante su trabajo Steve, me parece de una dificultad extrema, debe de tener muchas horas de grabado para llegar a este resultado final. Un saludo |
