My first hack at Scrimshaw
After a 3 day work shop with Richi Maier a WONDERFUL engraver and scrimhander this is what I have come up with. Any critiques are welcome. I still have to adjust under his horn and the corner of his eye so he doesnt look like he is crying..

I wonder if you might tell me anything that may help someone starting out, I hope I might get to your level one day! ~A |

Re: My first hack at Scrimshaw
Looks very good The only thing I could say is maybe the deepest blacks could be a bit blacker but that could just be the photo. Keep up the good work!

Re: My first hack at Scrimshaw
There seems to be a light streak down the right side of the eye too. It sure is a very good scrimshaw though. Well done.

Re: My first hack at Scrimshaw
That is very nice work Sarah. You are a very talented engraver and artist young lady. Are you going to be in the States this summer? Hope you can make the Engrave-In at Scott's this year. Would like to spend time with you this summer. How is school going this season. Fred

Re: My first hack at Scrimshaw
thank you guys for all of your input! School is going well I am getting very good grades and barely have anytime to myself anymore. I am working on a damascus knife with mammoth ivory handles, I am hoping to have it done for IWA in a few weeks. Unfortunatly fred I will not be in the US this summer, I have to complete an Internship up in germany in order to graduate next year. I will put up pictures to keep you all posted with progress (hopefully!)

Re: My first hack at Scrimshaw
Incredible work... The realism is excellent. If this is one of your first... I'd love to see more work when you gain even more experience.

Re: My first hack at Scrimshaw
That looks great! Even the touch of it like crying, I think it gives some sort of atmosphere, maybe you should leave it like that.
I am quite jealous about your workshop with him :-)! Looking forward to see the next piece! But don't work tooo much neither:-) Best, Hanne |
