Online ! Bulino or Scrim Tutorial!!!
Seeing as I can Only Win One's
I would Like to Start a Tutorial online, for either Bulino or Scrimshaw, Using the Classic Foot Control, !! I will Use The Rhino that I Entered for the Drawing Comp. (or Ant Hill ) And Go with it Step By Step.!! Although Bulino will be my First Try, I have Been Doing Scrimshaw for Years Know. And Bulino is only another Material, to work with, the tool and method stays similar. So Shall We Go With Scrimshaw? or Bulino.? ChrisB. Last edited by ChrisB; 04-11-2007 at 01:40 AM. |

Re: Online ! Bulino or Scrim Tutorial!!!
O.K. Guys, lets do the Rhino to start with.!!
I'm by No Means a Bulino Expert,!! this would be my First try as well,!! I will try and do it the way I see it, :willy_nilly: First off, lets make the tool, Go to the thread that Barry has, and look at the tool description he has there, I ground my point to a needle point 5deg Yaw. gave it a small flat on the face,(1.5mm dia) then ground a 60deg face, on the front with the 70deg x 17.5 relieve on the back. I find that with this small point, You can see more of the working area. Need a Sketch? let me Know. Secondly transfer your picture to the practice plate, I use the Tom White Method. Also Print a Larger one to keep handy for Reference later. Then I set my Classics Idling to just Idling, Experiment on a small piece of plate, You Really want very Minute!! Dots, and the large port closed about 75% Fast Rapid Movement. Hold the Graver like You Would A pen, and slowly start putting down dots over all the dark areas, no need at this point to make it Too dark, or color the White areas. it is just to get a outline area, I always start with the Eyes, Mouth, ears Etc First, this is the most prominent areas on any picture, and it must be Right. Will post the first pictures over the weekend. ChrisB. |

Re: Online ! Bulino or Scrim Tutorial!!!
O.K. Guys, Here Is The Final Pictures, Say If You Dont Understand!!
I did It In Record Time!! The Boss Was Over My Shoulder Every Minute, Even Know That I Post This Message, Get Finished.!! Hey Man my Buddies Wat to Know The Progress,!! This Is The Point I Told YaLL About, This Is The First Piontalicing that I do with the Picture, Only Cover the Major Areas, Then You Clean The Surface with a Cleaner. Do Very Rapid Movements Towards Yourselve, If You Go The Opposite Direction, You Will Find Out That The Engraver Digs In!! All The Light Area is Done In This Fashion.!! With The Bigger Photo That You Have Handy You Start Coloring the Picture. Do The Most Dark Areas First, The Angle Of Attack Does Matter, If You Look At The Picture in a Certain Manner, the Darkness Does Matter. !! Horisontal Marks Appear Darker Than Vertical!! Re: Online ! Bulino or Scrim Tutorial!!!
Chris, Thanks for the tutorial. A picture is worth a thousand words. I was wondering if your bulino points are HSS or Carbalt? Also can you elaborate on on achieving the differing level of shading and how to ensure that you don't "over shade"? Is this more a function pressure used or proximity of the dots or both?
Thanks again! |

Re: Online ! Bulino or Scrim Tutorial!!!
Just a question for the Bulino experts out there. It seems that, based on Chris' description of his technique, he is using a stippling action for the dots. If this is so, how do the results of "picking" out dots differ from the results achieved when stippling. It seems easier and faster to use the handpiece and stipple as Chris describes and the results seem great. Thanks Chris for taking the time to put this tutorial together. I'm looking forward to the scrimshaw.

Re: Online ! Bulino or Scrim Tutorial!!!
Jim, The Point is a carbalt, The different levels of shading is achieved by laying out Dots or lines, Either Closer, or spaced further appart, I always shade a area very Lightly,!! then go back and do a second pass on a area that needs to be darker, and a Third, to really get a dark edge, Proximity of the Dots.!! is what counts, Always refer to do Bigger Picture to obtain the correct shading.
Steve, the Sony has a retractable Lense, when You Switch on it telescopes Out, The Outer one that is the last segment fits nicely into the rubber cup on the Scope. |

Re: Online ! Bulino or Scrim Tutorial!!!
Hey Chris,
Do you think you could show us the way you're holding the gravers your using? I know for me this would clear up alot of confusion. When you say Scrim shaw, I'm thinking exacto knife. I'd like to see what the tool is doing with some pictures showing how you hold the graver. THANKS, Mark |

Re: Online ! Bulino or Scrim Tutorial!!!
Just put your index finger on the top of the Airgraver (Palm or Classic) and hold it natuarally point down. The depth of the needle strike is monitored with stroke length and the pinky finger. It does not have to be absolutely vertical.
Graver tips dictate angle of attack somewhat but bery little.
