Greetings!
Hello to all.
Newbe here, wanting to learn this art. I am a flintlock gunmaker and want to do some engraving on brass sideplates, patchboxes, butt plates. Might even try some steel engraving on barrel. Looking forward to member's advice  Dick

You'll get plenty of advice but everything you need has been posted at one time or another.
I started out with a graver ground from a broken drill bit and stuck it in a piece of hardwood. Start with copper. Be ready for a long and rewarding learning curve. John
