Jonny in Raleigh NC
Hello forum, my name is Jonny and I live in Raleigh NC. I just joined the forum. I got interested in engraving through my guitar building. At first I got interested in cutting inlays and then engraving to add to the inlays. Are there any guys here that engrave shell, like mother of pearl or abalone? Also are there any guys here near Raleigh? I recently bought a square, oval, and onglette gravers but I'm having a tough time sharpening these though, if anyone has any advice, tips, or info it would be very appreciated... Thanks, Jonny

Re: Jonny in Raleigh NC
Check with David Phelps at John-David Jewelers in Durham and be sure to tell him I sent you. He and his son, John, are great people and they are really good engravers.
By the way, you are close enough to attend the Ken Hurst Engrave-In the first weekend in May in Wilson. You should come to it if at all possible, as engravers from the entire east coast will be there and they are all willing to help you with any questions you may have. Bill Moody |

Re: Jonny in Raleigh NC
Weird.
I left a pretty long reply to this message. What I was saying, for cutting shell: Scraping is better than engraving in a conventional way. But you can get away with conventional engraving if you do super light passes. And then you can further refine your cuts by going through with a flat and drawing the edge through your lines with a slightly downward motion. |
