Default New - Low Profile Turntable Vise

I added the new Low Profile Turntable Vises to the AirGraver site today. www.engravingvises.com These have been in the works for some time. Mike Anders and Ray Cover have been testing prototypes. There are five available at this time. There is a larger batch in the works that should be ready in 3 to 4 weeks. Ray found these rubber tires that give just the right amount of grip. The vise is 6" in diameter (same as the Goliath vise) and since is so low (4.5" high) it helping with rigidity. The center of the sphere of the vise is at the top of the jaws, meaning when you tilt the vise the object being held does not move away.

I made a quick template for holding coins this afternoon. This one fits a quarter. I was concerned that the plastic may be too brittle, but it doesn't see to be. Template is 1/16" thick so the quarter is slightly above the surface of the template. It would be easy to make these for various sized coins. With the plastic there shouldn't be a concern of damaging the edge of the coin.

These first five vises are sold. There is a larger batch in the works that should be ready late February. I can leave the "add to cart" button live on the website so that people can still order, but they will be back ordered until then.

Now I get to ask my dumb question of the day, what diameter pins are the pin plates set up for? I need to get a pin set, but most of the set I see do not provide the pin dia. Some such as Pepe will be metric. I guess I could make my own, what material would you recommend?

There doesn't seem to be a standard for vise pin sizes. My understanding is that in the early days they selected a nail size. I am placing 1/8" in these pin plates. Standard dowel pins or stock can be used then.

Oh that is right.. There is a hitch that I should mention! Everyone has to engrave a disc with a logo on it for their vise. Not really, just kidding. But these first five are shipping out without a logo disc. I plan to engrave a die to stamp a disc with a logo on it for the vise. I'll ship those out later when finished for people to place the disc in the recess provided themselves.

Cool! haha i was talking about the flat surface around the logo but was a joke ,i like engrave tools and ever that i see something like this a voice in my head ask " can be engraved?" haha
About the hobo nickels holders, yes maybe plastic is too brittle, but i'm sure you will find a way to do it in a super way,we need it ,hobo nickels carving is changing in this days not only nickels are carved , pennies, dimes ,quarters, half and dollars now are the trend hehehe

Paolo, You'll need a larger vise to hold this vise so you can engrave it. I'll make you one. And then you'll need a bigger vise yet to engrave that one.

Steve,
I finally received my vise on Friday - it got hung up in Kansas due to the
weather. I like the vise. It has an excellent finish, a great design and
is good and solid. I like the flat top and the larger diameter. I makes it
easier to grasp and turn than my old 5" Pepe ball vise. I took the pin plates
off to make it a little lower as I usually use a block of wood with some
Thermoloc or double sided "golf grip tape" on it to hold a coin or pendent. I can now change my Leica A60 microscope objective from .75x to .63x which give me more working room and allows me to raise my drill press table a little for some more "knee" room. I'm very happy with the vise. It works well with my Shimpo 8" turntable. Thanks for the fine product.
Scott

Took delivery of this new ball vise yesterday, Steve,

and I am very pleased with all aspects of its design.

Thank you, Dave London, for showing me your Lindsay vise, a larger, earlier model, but having the same geometry!

I was long overdue to put aside my big ball vise, a perfectly good one, as the objects I engrave do not need a massive vise, other engravers, say of firearms, may need a heavier vise, but not me.

Steve's new vise seems just right for my work. Now that many of us work with a turntable, there is really no need to have a split ball design, as the turntable handles that, and also allows the vise to easily place any part of the work right on the revolving axis, in a few seconds. Of course, I really like my own little invention of a laser dot (dimmable) always showing me where the revolving axis of the turn table is located.

(The parts, to make one of these for yourself, cost all of $8 and instructions are here: http://picasaweb.google.com/rodcameron2/ ).

Back to the new vise. It will be no surprise to Lindsay customers to learn that the moving parts move like pure silk, the screw and jaws feel like they are moving by themselves. You can see in photos that the design is attractive. It has a very nice hand hold, and you can finger walk the vise around 360 degrees with ease. I like the low height, as I can raise my sawn-off drilling-machine stand table up another few inches, and get more leg room for my big skeleton. Then there is the large curved base, whose radius center is at the top of the jaws. This is so obviously the way to go, the top surface does not go out of focus, nor do you loose the image on your scope when you adjust the angle.

The price is right!

All in all, I am a happy camper, thank you, Steve!

Rod

Paolo, I think you will just have to have all your future pay checks and commission checks forwarded directly to Steve. I think direct deposit will work the best. You may need to work a little overtime because of shipping and duties. Seems like you are an addict and may require an intervention. Fred
