Default Three new products. Gravers and templates

I am going to try and copy and paste them from the AirGraver "news" page.
http://www.airgraver.com/news.htm

Three new products --

1: Tapered Carbalts
2: "Narrower" template
3: Negative relief template

Tapered CarbaltXD Blanks
Available in the following tapers

Straight
1 Degree
2 Degree
3 Degree

View the information and tips concerning rigidity and breaking points if using thin graver shanks on the Graver blanks page.
Note: the 3 degree or 2 degree taper is recommended over straight or 1 degree tapers. If new to engraving stick with the 3 degee to keep the rigidity in the shank while learning.
$23 each.
Sold in packs of

five.

Staight

2 Degree

3 Degree

"Narrower" Template Click photo to enlarge
The photo below illustrates three thinning techniques.

Thinning the tip of the blank can be done using this template which fits on the Lindsay sharpening fixture.
Illustrating how the pin can be moved if desired to rotate the grinds 45 degrees to the shank. "Narrower" Template
$8.00
Negative relief 116 Uniform-Parallel graver template.

This template is the same as the normal 116°, but the relief grind under the heel is negative. The purpose of this negative grind is to achieve more heel clearance. This additional relief was described in the
Lindsay Uniform-Parallel patent, but this is the first template made available to actually achieve this point.

This template requires that the height of the grinding lap or bench stone be 3/4" instead of the usual 1/2" seen in all previous templates. I recommend just shimming your 1/2" stones up the last 1/4". The plastic 6"x6" plate included with the full sharpening kit happens to be 1/4", so that can utilized.

A power hone for initially shaping this is helpful. However it can be done with the diamond bench stones. Steve tested how long it would take him to sharpen one from a carbalt blank on the diamond bench stones. It was 15 minutes. Of course starting with a the 3 degree tapered carbalt blank would considerably shorten the time.

More copy and paste - Tapered Carbalts

Graver narrowing tips
A long, thin shank can be useful, but there are drawbacks as well.

The bright side is that there is less material to grind away when sharpening, and that the view is less obstructed when engraving.

The disadvantage of a narrow shank is the lack of rigidity. An experienced engraver comes to realize that the object being engraved needs to be held securely in a vise to get the best results. If there is any recoil movement, things get difficult. The metal will seem to cut harder and more broken points will occur. The same principle applies to your cutter. When a long, thin graver is used with a power assisted graver, it will flex or vibrate with the result of power loss and more broken points. A thicker, shanked graver can make noticeably cleaner cuts than the same point on a long, slender shank when used in a power graver. That said, the effect is less pronounced when cutting fine lines.

A means for having a balance of both rigidity and a small tip is a taper rectangle shaped shank (similar to a knife blade). The "Narrower" template works to grind such a shank accurately.

Negative relief template with the Universal 116 degree point.

Below photo is from one of the original patent drawings that is at the bottom of the sharpener instructions page. It shows this type of point well. http://www.engravingschool.com/priva...0Sharpener.htm

Very interesting.

So, the 'Narrower' template has two holes, one for making the blank narrower with the sides parallel to the sides of the blank and one for doing them offset. Looks like you could use both of them on a blank to get a nice, narrow 90 degree traditional graver by just adding the face and heels.

I don't think that would help, because Karla has imposed a rule in the shop that if the cat (Natti) jumps on your lap you are not allowed to disturb her. All work stops until she is off your lap and finished purring or napping.

Why? Did you "accidentally" drop a sharp pointed object on the cat while it was in your lap last during the last week/month?

Thanks Paolo and Will for taking the good pics!
The holder isn't available yet. There were several versions in the patent application of it, so I am on samples of another to see which is preferred. Shouldn't be long.

can the negative relief template be used on a 90 degree blank, or just the 116 ?
btw-- the cat needs a new name-- nappy, or even catnappy.

Hi Monk, So far the negative relief is for the universal. You're right Catnappy would match her well! hehe

I just received the Negative Universal template from Steve and I sharpened my first graver with it. So far so good! It seems obvious to me especially on small letters such as an "s" that the heel drag is pretty much eliminated. I will admit that sharpening seemed a lot different and a bit harder than the usual way but I will probably get used to that. The 1/4" shim that Steve sent works just fine. I was hoping that maybe others have also tried it out and can share any tips or tricks they have learned with it and what they might see as the pros and cons of using this negative template? Steve? Thanks!
