Started to learn and practice scroll design to try to engrave.. any constructive criticism welcome :-)

wow some of those bikes on your blogspot are awesome. Nice work btw on those seats.

Also about the scroll. Did you read ron smith book on scrolls? It identifies all the scrolls that exist. Your scroll... its not bad but it could use some more tuning.

Are you free balling this or do you have a shape that you going to apply it to?

Hi there and thanks for your comments about my work on the bikes :-)

No, I haven´t read any engraving or scroll book yet, but it sounds like a good tips :-) I think I see what you mean by tuning.. after I woke up again it´s easier to see what could be different I think.. I see things I would have done different now :-)

This is just free balling, but getting a shape and make a scroll fit inn that shape would probably be harder and very good practicing?

After I finished it, I´m thinking I could use this on the side of a Harley Sportster gas tank tho and apply gold and silver leaf in the design (if you turn it left) :-)

The best example to a free standing design is steves practice plate.

The reason i find designing around a shape is better is because you can unify the scrolls surrounding the shape. It creates a better layout and flow for the scrolls.

Checked out the practice plates and it would be cool to get some, but I guess heavy shipping all the way to Norway might get expensive. But it sure looks cool to just order them at custom sizes. I´ll see if I find a local metal dealer :-)

I also see the need of a real vice.. I got this bowling ball and are trying to figure how to make it or set it up.. living in a townhouse makes some limitations :-) looking for my own shop for all my activities tho, but still..

Hi 276,

I've looked at some of your work before and think you're going to make a great engraver!

The scroll looks nice! The only critique I have is a very common error. The scroll that flows to the bottom of the photo has its backbone against another scroll and the leaves of these two scrolls are flowing in opposite directions.

The leaves should flow from an origin... Of course, all art is open to interpretation and you certainly have a very nice rendering there! Keep drawing... it's the best thing an engraver can do.

Something a little different than engraving, but I drew an engraving kind of scroll design (at least in my head) which I wanted to use on a new leather motorcycle solo seat I started on today.

The image is a bit crappy due to well worn iPhone lens, but.. you get the idea I hope :-)

Thanks a lot SE! :-) These are a little larger scale tho, but I like the idea to take designs inspired form other crafts and switch around :-) And I have always been a big fan of this scroll thing, and it´s a lot of fun to try and learn :-)

But '" momento mori" is like the moment of death?
Whilst 'Memento mori" is like, think of death?
I dont mind, but I would like to know what I sit on

Daniel, you are right.. The famous phrase is "Memento Mori" which means "remember you should die" and Momento Mori means "moment of death". Not that I wish that for anyone sitting on it, but.. :-) I´ll put it up for sale when it´s finished, and if it won´t be sold I can use it for display or on my own :-)

I added some color to it too, but after that I think maybe it looked better as "natural", but that is a bit too late now, so it is what it is :-)

I think the color helps highlight the design. And after it gets some use (hopefully) it would look even better.

Yea, agree the color helps highlight the design, but I think it looked a bit more classy before, but I´ll put it in the experience bag :-) The lighter parts will be darker with some usage and sun, so it´ll probably look better in time :-)

I like the uny color better too.
But what about dying the whole seat? or using line oil to darken up the lighter bits a bit. anyways, its a smashing seat!!!

Thanks guys! I´ll see what I can do to fix it the best I can.. it´ll also darken a bit when I treat it with the leather grease so it won soak in all the rain :-) Maybe polishing it high gloss will look a bit better too..
