This is the start of No.1 of a pair of 'Stock' guns for Holland& Holland. The scenes will be carved.

Re: Just Started.
Great stuff Phil!
Thanks for sharing the progression with us. In the first shot, have you already cut the main lines or is that just a freshly transferred layout? If they're cut did you do a transfer or just draw directly on the metal? I know from what you've posted before that you probably have quite detailed drawings of how it will look when done but I'm curious as to whether or not you take advantage of modern technology or your artistic skills to put on the initial layout. |

Re: Just Started.
Hello Phill,
Wauw, that's really something! Thanks so much for showing this :whoo: Great for me to see how the steps follow each other. That chuck you have in your airgraver, is that to be compatible with your sharpening device? And if you are shading there, what angle are you using? Like the size of your graver too. Nice and small so you can see where the point is. Hopefully whe get to see the rest of the progress in stages too Daniel |

Re: Just Started.
Steve,
Those are the first cuts, these days I use lots of Photoshop, it saves a lot of time, I then transfer with Tom White's system. Daniel, That 'Chuck' as you call it is something that Steve Lindsay and I came up with, it allows you to extend the graver so you've always got an easy working possition. It also allows you to get the use of nearly all of the tool, almost down to the end. I find it very comfortable to hold too. The angles are 45 deg. with about a 60 deg. face. Phil |

Re: Just Started.
Thanks Phil!
I couldn't tell for sure and figured it was worth asking. Your cuts are so clean they look like the lines of a very clean transfer. |

Re: Just Started.
Ron,
I cut all the background first, on this one it's quite shallow because of the design, but on some of my other guns it's a lot deeper. I like to do the fine work last there's less chance of marking it that way, and also it's a lot easier to make out the design and see what's what. Dave, You don't know about that extention piece because it's the only one around......talk nicely to Steve! Phil |

Re: Just Started.
Phil, great work as usual but do you ever get away from the bench.
I think your tool extention is realy a double spring loaded chip flipper to attain greater arc and distance so that you can get all the chips in a trash can across the room. Carl Bleile southwest, Ohio |

Re: Just Started.
Phil
Do you just make up the design and get it all approved or do H&H (in this case) suggest what they would like and you guys go back and forth to finalize? |

Re: Just Started.
Hi Danny,
In this case H&H had the idea, ie. large scroll with carved scenes, and they leave it to me, I think they know by now that they'll get something back that's not half bad. I don't do customer drawings, customers can't see the final product from working drawings, they need the full works, shading and all. This can take many days and then they say, ok, go ahead, or worse "I like them, but, can you re-do them and change that tiny area in the corner!!" Sometimes as with the Roosevelt gun there is a two-ing and fro-ing with ideas though. Phil |

Re: Just Started.
Fantastic work!! As always ... highly appreciative of the opportunity to peek over your shoulder.
Steve made an extension for me as well but it is a set length and it fits into the standard collet. It's a simple little accessory that adds a great deal of control to the tool as the graver gets shorter. I hope Steve offers these in varied lengths. Indexed with the collet's set screws, they would work well for switching fast between odd shaped gravers and flats too. Chris |

Re: Just Started.
Steve,
I would be interested in the adjustable collet as well. Am using Nancy's palmcontrol for now and would like to add the collet. Regards |
