First 'Banknote' engraving

I remembered doing some banknote style engraving at some time, and then I remembered, it was on the first gun of the set of 'The African Hunter Series' Sir. Samuel Baker by H&H.
The side plates were copies off Bakers sketches which were pen and ink and engraved in banknote style.
This was the first time I attempted this method. I don't think i've done it since.
I've just found this pull of the pistol cap.

Thanks for sharing your work again. So beautiful!

May I ask you a question?
I bought your graver template (it's great!!!), I guess you use the same graver for this banknote engraving. I noticed that you use a lot of curve line, some are light and some are heavy, how you cut the heavy curve line, by several light cut or one heavy cut? I try cut the curve line with the graver (5 degree belly angle, 15 degree belly angle, 70V, 90V.....), roll the graver to one side.....but there are always heel "drag".
Did you grind off a bit at the bottom (as you mentioned in one of your previous thread) for the curve line cutting? Would you mind to explain more?

If your going deeper make the face about 60deg not 45, you might still get a slight burr but this is extremely minute.
Don't roll the tool.
The belly of the tool is ground but not up to the tip, this is just to stop it from marking the work because the cutting angle is so low.

Phil fantastic as always. You still confuse me about the geometry of your bulino tool. what lift angle is that long belly ground at? Now you say the belly isnt ground all the way to the tip? Confused again.

A great starting point for the beginner is to do profiles in order avoid googely eyed animals. Yep ... I got 'em.

The flat that's ground on the belly is nothing to do with cutting...it's not like a heel. If you left the belly as a V when you lower the tool to cut, there's a possibility for the bottom of the V (about 1/4" back from the tip) to mark the work.

Just incredible engraving! Phil, When you make pulls like this do you prefer to use smoke or ink?

I use printers ink, it's been explained here before, but I rub the ink into the cuts and remove the excess with tissue.
I find water colour paper good and some types of card. Lick the paper, position it, place another piece on top and burnish. Sometimes it takes a few try's.
