Kaitlin's drawings and hand study

The kids came home from college and that is great. Kaitlin brought some of her drawing/paintings
home that she has done at college. I asked if I could take a picture of them and post them and she said ok.

These are about 18”x24” and drawn with prisma color pencils on top of a marker underlay.

Steve...My wife loves the still life..your daughter is very talented..I am very impressed with the hands..not easy to do..if she can do hands like that..she can do anything. I loved the picture of the Christmas tree with the beautiful cat amongst the cat ornaments..the thing about cats is that they can always find a warm and cozy spot..our cat Squeeky loves it underneath the wood stove..funny thing he doesn't scratch on our bedroom door at 3am in the morning during the winter..he's hunkered down underneath the stove..my wife thinks maybe we should keep it lighted during the summer too.

Thanks for showing Katlin's excellent work. Her talent and skill are obvious in her pictures. I hope she doesn't fall prey to the post-modern abstractionists that rule the world of the fine art today. Steve .... I think the right person to teach an art course for engravers has been right under your nose for a long time.

Between to two of you, something really wonderful could be put together in the art of scroll design and layout as well as the difficult areas of mammals (eyes and hands).

I used to work closely with art students. I was appalled by their school's inability or apathy toward teaching the fundamentals of drawing! Kaitlin obviously has had an excellent home background in the arts but it's also obvious that she has that certain innate "art gene" that most of the populous is missing. The technical, and for many impatient students, somewhat boring aspect of learning to truly DRAW WELL must be the first fundamental learned if one is to become any kind of artist. It does not matter what their eventual medium is, flat art or sculpture, monochromatic or colorful, all must descend from strong design and drawing skills. These skills are already a large part of Kaitlin's repertoire and will only grow with the proper nurturing she is getting.

These are all from my 400-level drawing course this semester, so the curriculum was wide open... I am hoping to use the pieces in my application portfolio to grad schools next year. They like to see drawings of hands, hehe.

The still life is framed and made it into the Art & Design Annual art show at school this year, so that was pretty exciting. Didn't win anything, though, both judges were graphic designers.

Roger, the Art Renewal Center is an awesome museum, I visit the bookmark often. I love the contemporary artists section the most, it's inspiring to see modern painters still working realistically.

I hear what you are saying about the graphic designer judges, Kaitlin. I have a friend that has reached his frustration point with his school and the graphic design direction. It seems to me that they aren't teaching much of what I always thought of as the fundamentals of drawing, and he was watching people with four and five years at this school get degrees with absolutely no drawing ability at all. It seems like skills with the pen tool in Photoshop are more important to them than using an actual pen or any other instrument. These pieces are really beautiful.
