Carbalt for bulino?

Steve asked me to checkout carbalt for bulino.
Well, I gave it a good road test today and it works great with dots and lines, and keeps its edge far longer than hss.
I sharpened it with my template only I raised the face to about 60 deg. to allow for the extra brittleness.
I have'nt had chance to try the M42's yet.

Maybe that is where I went wrong. I tried the Carbalts for bulino work and found that yes they will get very sharp and hold the edge but, would chip quickly if I started putting much pressure on it. But I left my face angle at 47.5. I will try a 60 face and see how that works. I really like the M42 for bulinos, they do not stay sharp as long but are pretty durable. -Brian

Thanks Phil and Brian, I was thinking the carbalt may be too brittle for the narrow bulino points. The 60 degree face Phil is using would sure help make the point stronger. I do have some newer carbalt Brian, but it shouldn't be any different than the earlier ones. In general, if making a narrower point the carbalt isn't going to be as durable from chipping compared to the M42.

M42 will probably go dull rather than break and the carbalt will probably break before it goes dull. Therefore with a stronger ground point (wider V and/or steeper face) the carbalt would be the better choice for lasting longer between sharpening. If you keep breaking points then M42 would be the next choice.

What is carbalt? I looked it up on wikipedia but nothing comes up, I'm guessing a type of steel, am I wrong on this?

I have just been trying the m42 for the bulino tools and like them alot Especially with face angles from 50-65 degrees. Havent actually tried any carbalts for bulino tools yet.

Steve, mayby you can have some made in .062 square as grinding that long belly is a biatch!

Tim, invest in a 60 grit dot lap. you can have that ground in a flash. -Brian
